US Revokes Speaker Anita Among’s Visa over Anti-Homosexuality Law – Basalirwa

The United States has recently taken the decision to revoke the visa of Uganda’s Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, in response to the passing of anti-LGBTQ legislation in the East African nation.

Lawmaker Asuman Basalirwa, who had championed the bill, expressed his views on the matter, stating, “Anita Among is the first victim of likely sanctions.”

Basalirwa revealed that he had received an email confirming the cancellation of the speaker’s current visa. He went on to share the contents of the email with journalists at parliament, stating, “The US government has revoked your (Among’s) current visa on information that became available after your last issuance.” He displayed a printout of the apparent email as evidence.

Basalirwa further explained that President Museveni had disregarded pressure from Western countries and rights groups, choosing to sign the anti-gay bill into law.

According to Basalirwa, Among has been advised to submit her passport to the US embassy through the Ministry of Finance for necessary modifications to her visa. “I believe they were searching for my visa for the US, but they couldn’t find it
