UMUGNESA won with 561 points while Baganda Nkobazambogo Students Association (BANKOSA) followed in the second position with 559 points.
The Basoga Nseete, Westerners of Uganda Martyrs University Association (WUMUA), and BANAMBOKA (Congolese) followed respectively.
Uganda Martyrs University Burundi and Rwandese Students Association (UMUBURWA) did not join the competitions but were represented.
This year’s Cultural Gala was organized under the theme; Impact of Culture to the youth of today. It included among others, presentations of the set piece (University Anthem), food exhibitions, evolution of the traditional wear, folk songs and dances; while the Cultural King and Queen title was won by the BANAMBOKA.
The Speaker of Parliament of Uganda, the Right Hon. Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga who was the Guest of Honour was impressed with the University’s dedication to ensuring that the students appreciate each other’s culture by making this activity part of the University Calendar not just for a day but a week.
“I don’t think that there is any other University that dedicates a full week to Culture?” she acknowledged.
Hon. Kadaga has promised to introduce the University Troupe (UMU Troupe) to the events managers at parliament who will give them a chance to perform at various events as a way of improving the students’ talents and visibility of the troupe.
The Vice-Chancellor Rev. Prof. John Chrysostom Maviiri appreciated the various associations for celebrating their cultures because it is one of the things that help to identify them. He added that at UMU, there is Cultural diversity in form of different languages, a way of life and religion but we use them to learn and appreciate one another.
The Dean of Students Mrs. Roselyne Ssali encouraged students to be proud of their cultures adding that at UMU, students are encouraged to develop their talents through such competitions.
