Uganda Christian University suspends 26 pregnant students

Uganda Christian University (UCU) suspended 26 girls for conceiving yet they were not officially married.

The dismissed girls were found pregnant during random tests carried out at Bishop Barham College in Kabale district, a college affiliated to UCU.

The girls have since then accused the University for acting harshly on them because they were not given chance to defend themselves.

However, Godwin Kiiza, the Dean of Students said the students  were suspended because they were admitted as single students and not as married. “Students are not supposed to engage in any sexual immorality, that is, sex before marriage,” he added.

“Some students who go against our rules first face a disciplinary committee and if the committee finds them guilty of being pregnant, they are suspended,” he said.

Prof. Manuel Muranga, Principle at Bishop Barham College said they only teach students who are accountable to God.

The university’s Public relations officer, Reuben Twinomujuni said that not all the 26 were pregnant but only six were victims.

“Only six girls were pregnant and the rest had other problems and most of them were forgiven and allowed back to campus.”
