About US:

The British High Commission is the diplomatic liaison office that aims to develop and maintain close bilateral relations with Uganda, in accordance with British government policies. The British High Commission is responsible for the political relationship between the UK and Uganda, and we provide advice and guidance on political and governance issues. BHC provides assistance and documentary services to British nationals in Uganda.

 

Job Summary: The Trade Advisor will lead on the priority campaign for renewables and agritech for Uganda To plan and deliver a multi-year forward-looking renewables and agritech campaign, including deploying financial and other resources towards events and activities in Uganda and in the United Kingdom. To provide analysis and advice on the renewables and agritech sectors to help drive UK trade interests in Uganda. To support other sector campaigns as appropriate, working with the Head of Trade in Uganda as well as relevant Sector Directors for renewable energy and agritech across African Trade board. To manage the Ugandan team’s budget, ensuring we utilise our resources effectively, strategically and transparently. To line manage a Trade Officer and ensure returns on volume services are made promptly to the Country Head.

 

S/he will be responsible for delivering to a challenging set of targets reflecting support to successful UK export wins in Uganda in the renewables sector and agritech sector.

In addition, s/he will be expected to provide high quality analysis and advice of the macro-economic environment as well as on sector-specific developments.

The renewables and agritech sectors are a top priority for UK trade interests in the region, and there are many major opportunities in Uganda to pursue.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supporting British companies seeking commercial success, and also in identifying major future opportunities as well as ‘quick wins’.
  • The role requires the tenacity to support British companies achieve success in Uganda, as well as the ability to assess the sectors and provide advice on where the strategic opportunities lie. This will be through identifying market access barriers and providing advice to the DIT leadership team on how these can be overcome.
  • There is also a requirement to line manage a Trade Support Officer and coordinate returns on key DIT – Uganda targets regularly as well as manage other, lower priority sector work at times and therefore to manage multiple portfolios.
  • Capable of managing and leading multiple projects.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The applicant for the British High Commission (BHC) Trade Advisor – Maternity Cover EO job hold a University Degree
  • Good networking skills
  • Knowledge of the UK economy and areas of UK competitive advantage.
  • Understanding of major projects life cycles.
  • Experience in Trade Policy and Market Access work.
  • The Trade Advisor will be a confident self-starter, a team player with excellent communication skills, with the ability to network with a wide range of contacts at senior levels in Government and the private sector.
  • Resilient and able to deliver at pace.
