Bugema University is one of the few private chartered universities in Uganda. Bugema seats on a 640-acre piece of land in Luwero district, Bamunanika county, Kalagala sub-county.
The institution was started in 1948 as a training school for teachers and pastors for the Seventh-day Adventist Church in East Africa. It was by then called Bugema Adventist College.
Due to the increasing student numbers and demands, Bugema Adventist College later changed its status from a college to a university in1994.
The university was granted a license by the Ministry of Education and Sports to operate as a university in 1997.
Bugema University is also a fully Accredited University by the Adventist Accrediting Association based in Maryland, USA.
The university’s code of conduct is based on Christian principles which reflect the spiritual heritage of Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Besides the main campus in Luwero, Bugema University runs an in-service/holiday program at its other six campuses. There is one in Kampala offering Post-graduate studies, degree and diploma courses.
Branches/campuses
The others include the one in Kasese District for a Diploma in Primary Education through the in-service program. There is also Lira campus, Mbale campus, Arua and Kisii campus Kenya.
