According to the university website, The University became operational on 26th September, 2001 with only 55 students and was soon merged with the famous Institute of Kiswahili and Foreign Languages (IKFL), which was established in 1979 with the aim of training teachers in Kiswahili and Foreign Languages to create SUZA
The initial aim of establishing State University of Zanzibar was to serve the Zanzibar and Tanzanian community for their human resources needs starting with the needs of secondary school teachers.
The university is thus seated in the posh port city of Zanzibar with a students population of over 30000.
In 2006, The Department of Computer Sciences and IT was established to be the first department to offer degree programs at SUZA.
The Department continued to grow by offering diploma and degree programs in Computer Science and IT.
