Senior Broadcast Journalist (Digital), BBC Africa

Job Introduction

The BBC World Service has grown its multimedia operations in Africa by doubling the number of language services from six to 12 and investing in modern TV and Digital production facilities.  The BBC’s digital journalism in Africa is an expanding field and our ambition is for our content to reach underserved audiences – such as younger, more female and more diverse demographics in Africa.

We have an exciting opportunity to create new forms of digital storytelling and journalism that reaches 111 million people in Africa. As a Senior Broadcast Journalist you will join a new multi-disciplinary digital team in Nairobi made up of news gatherers, designers, software developers and social media specialists who will be working with journalists working across 12 language services.

Role Responsibility

As a Senior Journalist you will be part of the BBC News website team, covering stories through news, features, graphics, photo stories and video, produced in English for African and global audiences.  You will be responsible for selecting, researching, writing and editing the best stories, while ensuring that they adhere to editorial values through rigorous fact checking and subbing of copy.

You will also work closely with teams in London and the rest of BBC Africa to improve the coverage of African news on the BBC News website.

Are you the right candidate?

We are looking for two highly experienced journalists with track records in leading editorially and creatively, with strong digital production skills in an area such as social engagement, online or video journalism.  We expect applicants to demonstrate experience in writing news and producing features for African and international audiences.

It is essential that you have a thorough understanding of media law and demonstrable experience in subbing copy to the highest editorial standards.

You will be an innovator, somebody who can think outside the box to develop creative strategies to support, enhance and engage our audiences across Africa and internationally.
