Scholarships for Low and Middle Income Countries in ICP Master of Transportation Sciences

The ICP “Master of Transportation Sciences – Road Safety in Low & Middle-Income Countries” offers a 2-year multidisciplinary master programme with a unique focus and approach to Road Safety in Developing Countries. The programme is supported by VLIR UOS and has 12 scholarships available each year.

Hasselt University’s headquarters are in the Old Prison (Oude Gevangenis) on Hasselt Campus. This building on Martelarenlaan in Hasselt is the first place to go when you first enrol all the university and for all contacts with the student administration as a student.

The participants are expected to have both a passive and active command of the English language at a reasonable level.

Scholarship Description

  • Course Level: Scholarships are available to pursue Master degree programme.
  • Study Subject: The ICP scholarship students follow a specific track within our Master of Transportation Sciences with a focus on Road Safety in Low & Middle-Income Countries. Cases will be tailored to their needs and input. Master thesis and internship are also related to a topic relevant to the South and the future careers of the graduates.

  • Scholarship Award: Which costs are covered by the scholarship?
  1. Monthly allowance: € 1150/month (for the cost of meals, transport, personal expenses and accommodation)
  2. 1- time payment for indirect travel costs: € 150
  3. 1- time payment for logistical allowance: € 850
  4. Insurance, international travel and tuition fee
  • Number of Scholarships: The Flemish Interuniversity Council (VLIR-UOS) offers 12 scholarships for our Master’s programme “Master of Transportation Sciences – Road Safety in Low & Middle-Income Countries”.
  • Scholarship can be taken in Low and Middle-Income Countries

Eligibility for the Scholarship

Eligible Countries: Be a national and resident of one of the below 31 countries:

  • Africa: Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, DR Congo, Ethiopia, Guinea, Cameroon, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Morocco, Mozambique, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Niger
  • Asia: Cambodia, Philippines, Indonesia, Palestinian Territories, Vietnam
  • Latin America: Bolivia, Cuba, Ecuador, Guatemala, Haiti, Nicaragua, Peru

Entrance Requirements: Applicants must meet the following criteria:

A/ ACADEMIC ADMISSION CRITERIA:

  • Required study level and degree programme:
    Participants should have at least an academic bachelor degree in one of the following disciplines:

    • behavioural sciences: psychology, sociology
    • political and social sciences
    • mathematical and statistical sciences
    • economy, transport economy
    • transport or traffic planning, urban planning or design, geography, (urban) architecture
    • engineering: transport engineer, civil engineerMinimum grade obtained: a distinction
  • Sufficient knowledge of the English language:
    The participants are expected to have both a passive and active command of the English language at a reasonable level. The participant should be able to follow ex-cathedra lessons, take notes and present some case studies themselves. Proof of English proficiency has to be submitted. This can be one or more of the below:

    • 1-year comprehensive English-based instruction at a university or recognized equivalent
    • passed for a TOEFL test (min. score 550 PBT, 213 CBT or 79 IBT)
    • passed for IELTS test (min. overall band score of 6.0)
    • passed another English test of the similar level as TOEFL or IELTS

B/ SCHOLARSHIP ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA:
You can only apply for a scholarship if you meet all VLIR-UOS scholarship criteria:

    The maximum age for a master programme scholarship is 35 (on 1st January 2019).

English Language Requirements: The participants are expected to have both a passive and active command of the English language at a reasonable level.

Application Procedure

How to Apply: As of October 2018 until 1st February 2019 you will be able to apply for admission in 2019-2020.

STEP 1. Fill in an online application form

Make sure all required fields have been filled in and all required documents have been uploaded.

Important notes for the registration:

  1. page STUDY PROGRAMME: select “Master of Transportation Sciences – Traffic Safety”
  2. page LEARNING ACCOUNT: if you have not yet obtained a degree in Belgium, the balance of your learning account is 140
  3. page SUCCESS RATE: if you weren’t enrolled at Hasselt University in the previous year, skip this page and proceed to the next page of the application form
  4. If you are eligible to apply for the ICP scholarship, you will see this on the page FINANCES of the online application. To apply for the scholarship, you have to select the option “YES” for “application for a VLIR-ICP scholarship”.

STEP 2. VLIR UOS scholarship application form

To apply for the ICP scholarship, you have to follow a specific procedure. You will find more information about this procedure on the VLIR-application form, which you can download at the top of the UP/DOWNLOAD page of your online application form.

STEP 3. Send hard copies of your application by post

  • printout of the VLIR-UOS scholarship application form
  • hard copies of legalised* degree certificates and academic transcripts
  • hard copies of additional necessary documents (certified English translations of diplomas and degrees, proof of English proficiency, 2 letters of recommendation, passport picture, …): see checklist

legalised/certified hard copies of degree certificates and academic transcripts.
You can ask your university to issue a new set of original transcripts or you can ask the university who originally issued the documents to make a certified copy of your diploma/transcript/diploma supplement. They stamp the copy, thereby attesting that it is a true copy of the original document.
Photocopies or digital versions of certified copies cannot be accepted!
