South African Research Ethics Training Initiative (SARETI) is offering up to four masters scholarships for African students.

The SARETI Masters programme is a Masters of Social Science degree (MSocSc: Health Research Ethics) through the School of Psychology at the University of KwaZulu-Natal.

SARETI will offer full scholarships, including living and transport expenses, to up to four students from Africa each year. The application deadline is 28 August 2015.

Eligibility: All professionals whose work is intimately involved with health research ethics, either as senior researchers, Ethics Committee Members, as institutional representatives responsible for the oversight of health research, but also journalists, lawyers, philosophers, and social scientists, and others involved with health interventions and health research. All applicants (including self-funded applicants) need at least a Bachelors (honours) or 4 year equivalent degree to be eligible to enroll for a Masters degree. In addition, current and future experience and involvement in the ethics of health research is essential.

Scholarship Open for International Students: University of KwaZulu-NatalStudents from Africa (Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Côte d’Ivoire, Djibouti, Egypt, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mauritius, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Western Sahara, Zambia and Zimbabwe) can apply for these scholarships.

Scholarship Description: SARETI announces the availability of scholarships that offer full financial support for up to four Masters degree trainees yearly. These scholarships are available to professionals involved in health ethics and health research and who are resident in Africa. (Scholarships for short courses, fellowships and non-degree programmes are not available but self-funded students are welcome to apply for these programmes or particular modules, or the degree programme). Self-funded PhD study programmes can be offered to selected applicants. Students wishing to pursue a PhD are welcome to submit a short 1-2 page concept paper with some key references and the SARETI Executive will consider their request further. Please note that the PhD is a research degree with no coursework.

Number of award(s): Up to four scholarships are available for students.

Duration of award(s): Scholarships are awarded for the full duration of master study program.

What does it cover? SARETI provides financial assistance to each funded SARETI graduate annually to support the completion of the SARETI research thesis on each students’ return to their home institution. SARETI will offer full scholarships, including living and transport expenses.

How to Apply: With your application please attach the following
-A brief curriculum vitae (not more than 5 pages).
-A 2-page essay (not more) motivating your choice in research ethics training
-A letter from your employer specifying:
Support for your proposed course of study
Ensuring appropriate employment or promotion on return
Ensuring time and opportunity for you to complete the research project after returning home.
-Copies of selected publications of yours in health research (Maximum of 5) (Reference to indexed journal articles is sufficient; for un-indexed publications, please send hard copy).
-Photocopies of your highest qualifications (NB Certified copies or originals will be needed later on when you formally enroll).
-Certified copy of your Passport.
