Nico Rosberg took advantage of the strategic error from the Mercedes Team to claim the Monaco Grand Prix win ahead of Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton.
Rosberg was trailing his Mercedes team-mate and world champion Lewis Hamilton with 15 laps remaining when Hamilton was pitted for a late safety car following Max Verstappen‘s crash.
Rosberg and Ferrari‘s Sebastian Vettel did not stop and passed Hamilton before he rejoined.
This gave the 29-year-old German the chance to win the Monaco Grand Prix with Sebastian Vettel finishing in the runners up position and Lewis Hamilton third.
Rosberg win means he is the fourth man to have won a Monaco Grand Prix hat-trick adding his name to the three others – Briton Graham Hill, Frenchman Alain Prost and Brazilian Ayrton Senna — to have won this classic 78-laps race three times in a row.
Rosberg who was also winning two consecutive Grands Prix for the first time was very pleased with his achievement and praised how his Mercedes team-mate Hamilton drove brilliantly, “I am very happy,” he said.
He continued “But I know it was just a lot of luck. Lewis drove brilliantly and would have deserved the win, for sure, but that’s the way it is in racing.
“I know I got lucky. I will just enjoy the moment.”
Hamilton who has won just once at Monaco recognized how hard the race was and did not put the blame to Mercedes, “It was not the easiest of races,” said Hamilton.
“But the team has been amazing all year and we win and lose together.”
He went on and gave an insight of what he is planning to do next, he said: “Come back and win the next one.”
Mercedes F1 boss Toto Wolff said: “The answer is we got the maths wrong.
“That one goes on the team and I apologise. He’s a great leader and a great driver. I am sure he will understand sometimes we make errors.”
The result cuts Hamilton’s advantage in the championship over Rosberg to 10 points, with Vettel a further 18 points adrift.
Red Bull’s Daniil Kyvat was fourth and his Australian teammate Daniel Ricciardo fifth.
Kimi Raikkonen finished sixth for Ferrari, Sergio Perez of Force India-seventh,Jenson Button-eight, Brazilian Felipe Nasr came home ninth for Sauber while Spaniard Carlos Sainz finished 10th to score a point in the second Toro Rosso car.
