Overall job purpose

Mental Health Uganda is a non-government disabled peoples organization that works with people with mental health problems. Mental Health Uganda seeks to recruit a project offi cer. His/her core duties will entail fundraising, capacity building of groups of persons living with mental disabilities, and partnership building and collaborations at national and local grassroots groups in a dynamic, creative and committed manner with an emphasis on integration through a rights based approach.

Key Responsibilities

  • Participate in developing a resource mobilization plan highlighting priority areas relating to MHU objectives, grant concept papers and proposals
  • Assess Programme effectiveness and identify opportunities for new projects;
  • Plan, oversee and ensure high quality and timely Programme implementation;
  • Support capacity development initiatives of grassroots groups through training, monitoring of progress, and mentoring;
  • Support network/coalition/alliance-building for joint advocacy at national and grassroots groups and constituents;
  • Attend partners and coalitions meetings;
  • Provide coordination and innovation in managing grassroots groups with a focus on community integration;
  • Support communities to identify priority areas and participate in budgeting processes at the local level;
  • Develop and spearhead periodic advocacy campaigns/ initiatives on the emerging mental health issues;
  • Documentation of success stories, lessons learnt, and sustainability mechanisms to work as benchmarks for future project intervention.
  • Participate in Programme learning, knowledge generation and management;
  • Prepare and submit reports on activities, programs and as directed by the supervisor;
  • Carry out any other assignment given by the supervisor.

Person specification

  • Degree in social work, Development Studies, Community development Community psychology or project management with a minimum of 5 years relevant working experience in a civil society organisation. A post graduate education in any of the related fields will be an advantage.
  • A good understanding of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and substantive knowledge of disability rights.
  • Demonstrated experience volunteering or work with people with mental disabilities
  • Demonstrated knowledge on mental health rights (desirable).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Experience in working with community-based groups in Uganda.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Integrity, team work, diplomacy and professionalism.
  • Willingness to travel frequently within the country.

He/ she should be ready to start 1st February. The successful candidate will receive a two year contract subject to renewal upon a satisfactory performance and availability of funds.
