Busitema University Elects New Council Leadership at Special 16th Meeting
Busitema University, a prominent public institution located in eastern Uganda, has ushered in new leadership following its special 16th Council Meeting held on August 16, 2024.
During this pivotal session, Professor William Bazeyo, a distinguished physician and public health specialist, was elected as the 5th Chairperson of Busitema University Council.
In addition to Professor Bazeyo’s appointment, other key positions were filled. Hon. Dr. Beatrice Wabudeya was elected as Vice Chairperson, while Ms. Rosemary Mutyabule, a Council Appointee, was named Chair of the Appointments Board, among others.
Profile of Professor William Bazeyo
Professor William Bazeyo is a seasoned academic and public health expert with a career spanning over two decades. Prior to his election at Busitema University, he served as the Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Finance and Administration at Makerere University from 2017 to 2020. His tenure also included eight years as Dean of the Makerere University School of Public Health, where he played a key role in the formation of the Higher Education Alliance for Leadership Training for Health in 2005. The alliance, which includes seven schools of public health across six countries, underscores Professor Bazeyo’s commitment to improving health education and leadership in Africa.
In addition to his academic roles, Professor Bazeyo serves as the Director of the Centre for Tobacco Control in Africa, a critical initiative that supports African governments in regulating tobacco use and promoting public health.

Established in 2007 through a Statutory Instrument, Busitema University operates a multi-campus model that spans several districts in eastern Uganda, including Busitema, Nagongera, Namasagali, Arapai, Mbale, Pallisa, and Kaliro. The university was created to address the need for equitable access to higher education in a region that previously lacked a public university.
Busitema University offers a range of critical study programs across various disciplines, including Engineering, Science Education, Health Sciences, Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences, Agriculture and Animal Sciences, Management Sciences, and Vocational Education.
