Prof. Mondo Kangonyera to wave bye bye to Makerere University as Chancellor

Prof. Mondo Kangonyera’s contract as Makerere University Chancellor expires in January 2016 and he is not eligible for re-appointment after serving for two terms.

According to section 30 (2) of the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act, the Chancellor shall hold office for a period of four years, but shall be eligible for re-appointment for one more term.

The chancellor of Makerere University is appointed by the President of Uganda  on recommendation by the University Council for a renewable four-year term.

The Chancellor is the titular head of the University and presides over all ceremonial assemblies of the University, confers degrees and other academic titles and distinctions.

Who is Prof.Mondo Kangonyera?

Kagonyera was born in Kabuga Village, Rukungiri District, in the Western Region of Uganda, in 1941, to Zakaria Kagonyera and Elizabeth Kirihura.

He attended Kigezi College Butobere for his O-Level studies, before being admitted to Royal College Nairobi for his A-Level.

He then joined University of Nairobi where he graduated with a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine in the early 1960s.

He later went on to obtain a Master of Science in Veterinary Medicine, from the University of California Davis, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy from the same institution.

In 1971, Kagonyera joined Makerere University as a lecturer.

He was instrumental in establishing the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, which has since morphed into the College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources & BioSecurity.

He also served as the chairman of the university appointments board from 1993 until 1999. He left the university to join Ugandan politics in 1998.

As a politician, he served as the Member of Parliament for Rubabo constituency in Rukungiri District and as a minister for general duties in the office of the prime minister.

He also served as the deputy managing director of the Ugandan National Social Security Fund from 2006 until 2008.

Professor Kagonyera was first appointed Chancellor by President Yoweri Museveni on the recommendation of Makerere University Council on 23rd October 2007.

He is currently serving his second four-year term, following his re-appointment by H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the President of the Republic of Uganda on 24th October 2011 and re-installation on 12th January 2012.

Professor George Mondo Kagonyera is the second non-Head-of-State Chancellor of Makerere University, the first being Rt. Hon. Professor Apolo Robin Nsibambi, a distinguished alumnus of Makerere University and former Prime Minister of the Republic of Uganda.

Outside the University, Professor Kagonyera has served in various capacities as a Member of Parliament and as a Minister in various portfolios and has shown exceptional brilliance and consistency in loyalty and dedication to this country.

He is an academician of long and proven expertise and his service to Makerere University as a Teacher, Researcher and Chairperson of the Appointments Board and Chancellor has won him great admiration.
