Prof. Elly Katunguka Appointed National Council of Higher Education chairperson

Kyambogo University ice Chancellor, Professor Elly Katunguka Rwakishaya has been given another heavy duty from President Yoweri Museveni .

He has been appointed  as the Chairperson of the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE)., a body that regulates institutions of higher learning in Uganda.

He takes over from Professor Pen Mogi, former Vice Chancellor of Gulu University who had also replaced Professor Fred Kayanja, former Vice Chancellor of Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST).

Prof Katunguka will start service as head of eighteen eminent persons on March 22, 2019 for a period of five years.

Section 7 of the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act, 2001 accords power of appointment of the Council members to the President and the Vice Chairperson.

In an interview with URN, Professor Katunguka said it was a sign of trust from the appointing authority.

“I welcome this appointment and it is a sign of trust from the appointing authority. It is a huge responsibility to guide the development of higher education in the country. We shall need the support and goodwill of all the actors in this sector and other sectors that impact on higher education,” Prof Katunguka said.
