President Museveni is ready to hold a meeting with Makerere University Staff and students to strengthen the relationship between the institution and the government of Uganda in July 2014.
“The youth of Makerere University, who constitute about 80 percent of the university community, would definitely like to meet with you at a time of your convenience to share their views on matters affecting them and the Nation,” Prof. John Ddumba Ssentamu, Vice Chancellor Makerere university told the president while speaking at the Second Convention of the Great Lakes Students’ Union held on Saturday 7th June 2014 at Makerere University.
“I am ready to meet Makerere University Staff to discuss symbiosis early July 2014. The Vice Chancellor and the Chairperson of MUASA should follow up this matter with the President’s Office,” the president responded to the Vice Chancellor’s call.
The Convention of the Great Lakes Students’ Union was under the theme, “Towards a Bright Future of the Youth in Propelling Unity, Peace and Prosperity in the Great Lakes’ Region.”
Prof. John Ddumba Ssentamu requested the President to support the University in the process of creating a legal and procedural environment conducive for the establishment of a public- private partnerships to help the university to develop assets into viable income generating facilities.
President Museveni argued the youth to promote Pan-Africanism and modernisation by dedicating their energy towards working for the common good of all people.
The Great Lakes Students’ Union was launched by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni last year and it has a membership of over 5,000 past and present student leaders from the Great Lakes Region.
The Chairperson of the Great Lakes Students’ Union, David Lewis said the purpose of the Union is to build a breed of leaders who will fully understand the power of regional integration for the realization of social-economic transformation in the Great Lakes Region.
