The president of Uganda commissioned a new Faculty of Applied Sciences and Technology (FAST) state of the art building at Mbarara University of Science and Technology
H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni also launched the university’s infrastructure master plan for the Kihumuro campus. This was at a Silver Jubilee celebration held at Mbarara University of Science and Technology’s Kihumuro campus to mark 25 years of existence on 29th October 2014 where the president was the Chief Guest.
In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Celestino Obua, congratulated the students and staff of MUST upon the culmination of 25 years.
Prof. Celestino Obua requested the President to influence the facilitation of 100 billion shilling infrastructural requirement for the Kihumuro campus over the period of 10 years, he also pointed out that the buildings and equipment at the Mbarara town campus required overhauling.
The outgoing Chancellor, Prof. F.I.B Kayanja, thanked the President for the conceiving Mbarara University of Science and Technology and for his unending support to the university right from its inception. Prof. Kayanja also thanked the Republic of Cuba that provided 4 out of the 5 pioneer teaching staff.
President Museveni described the circumstances that prompted the government to establish MUST, among which was the inappropriate doctor to patient ratio at the time, considering that Makerere University was not producing the sufficient number of health professionals for the nation.
The president also thanked Prof. Kayanja for his excellent management style and his ability to listen to advice. He thanked the students and staff for maintaining discipline, which is characterised by the fact that MUST has never experienced a strike.
The president of Uganda also commended MUST for offering relevant courses required in the Ugandan job market and expressed his belief that most MUST graduates acquired jobs in the market on completion of their studies.
