The Parliamentary Committee on Education and Sports conducted an oversight visit to Gulu University ahead of the upcoming Parliamentary Sitting in Gulu City at Kaunda Grounds from 29th to 30th August, 2024.
The committee, led by Hon. Asiimwe Molly Musiimwe, commended the university for its achievements over the years. Hon. Asiimwe is the Deputy Chairperson Parliamentary Committee on Education and Woman Member of Parliament Rwampara district
During the visit, the committee assessed the university’s infrastructural development, academic performance, and challenges hindering progress. Prof. George Openjuru Ladaah, the Vice Chancellor of Gulu University, presented the university’s progress report to the committee.
Prof. Ladaah highlighted the university’s successful operationalization of the new campus in Kotido and the ongoing construction of the Senate Building and Gulu University Moroto Constituent College Multipurpose building.
He expressed disappointment over the delay in the degazettement of Gulu Central Forest Reserve, which is essential for the university’s expansion.
The Vice Chancellor also urged the government to expedite the construction of the Gulu University Specialized Teaching Hospital, which will serve as a university hospital and teaching facility as well as a general hospital for the northern region.
In response to the Vice Chancellor’s report on the specialized hospital, Hon. Asiimwe suggested that the university write a letter to President Yoweri Museveni to emphasize the urgency of the matter.
This is not the first time a parliamentary committee has visited Gulu University. In June 2023, the Parliamentary Committee on Science, Technology, and Innovation also conducted an oversight visit to the university.
