Makerere University Business School (MUBS) Principal, Professor Wasswa Balunywa has faced the Public Accounts Committee-PAC to answer questions on how the University lost a big chant of land.
The Auditor General, John Muwanga‘s report for the financial year 2016/2017 indicates over 12 acres of the University land in Bugolobi was lost to an investor.
The report shows that the investor, through the Uganda Land Commission, compensated the University with approximately 2.2 acres of land Butabika swamp near Kireka.
However, it is alleged that the compensated University land was already inhabited by squatters and part of it is a swamp.
The asked Balunywa why MUBS accepted a swamp as compensation for the prime school land in Bugolobi.
Responding to the PAC Chairperson, Gerald Karuhanga‘s query on how the University could accept a swamp, Balunywa claimed that a request for an alternative land had already been submitted to the Uganda Land Commission.Another query was on how MUBS carried out major renovation works at its Jinja campus at Shillings 679 million yet the land and buildings belong to Jinja Municipal Council and is currently allocated to Narambhai Primary School.
Prof. Balunywa asked for the intervention of the committee prompting Karuhanga to summon Uganda Land Commission.
