Parliament directs Makerere University to drop idea of giving shs4,000 to students for meals

The Parliament’s education committee has directed Makerere University to change their plans of phasing out the provision of meals for students under the government-sponsorship scheme in halls of residence.

The university council had proposed to give 4,000 shillings to each student per day to cater for meals starting August 2018.

The Members of Parliament asked the university officials to revise the figure from 4,000/= to at least 10,000 /= per day.

The decision to phase out meals was based on claims of delays in remittance of funds by the government. This has has in return affected the operations of food providers who are outsourced.
