Mengo Hospital was founded in 1897 in Kampala, and is the oldest hospital in Uganda. It currently serves as an urban community hospital that provides modern medical care. Mengo Hospital provides comprehensive care including radiology, obstetrics, dentistry, orthopedics, and surgery. Additionally, Mengo Hospital provides critical training and education to health professionals through its various programs in midwifery and nursing, health sciences, and laboratory technology. Mengo Hospital also has a dedicated research and development team that works to find new solutions to health issues in Uganda.
Job Summary: The Ophthalmic Clinical Officer will provide holistic ophthalmic nursing services to both inpatient and out patients within the hospital.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Work in liaison with ophthalmologists and other health care officers to provide integrated, quality care for patients
- Carry out diagnosis, treatment, review and management of eye patients
- Asses and refer complicated patient cases to the Ophthalmologists as need may be for further management
- Conduct minor surgeries such as incisions and drainages
- Provide patients/clients with accurate information concerning their eye conditions and managing them accordingly
- Identify surgical cases and refer them for admission or discharge
- Participate in Continuing Medical education (CME) and research activities
- Prepare and submit periodic reports as required
- Comply with the established code of conduct and ethics for Allied Health Workers
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The ideal candidate for the Ophthalmic Clinical Officer job opportunity should preferably hold a Diploma in Clinical medicine and Higher Diploma in Ophthalmology from a recognized Institution
- Registered with the Nurses/Clinical Officer’s Council
- A minimum of two years of working experience (Post specialization) in a busy eye hospital/ Clinic setup.
- Willingness to work during odd hours and on weekends/holidays
- Good team player
