Nkumba University students have gone on a violent strike over tough policies introduced by the newly appointed Academic Registrar, Obonyo Christine. The strike started on Monday morning of 17th November 2014.

The fusing students blocked Entebbe-Kampala highway for more than 30 minutes prompting anti riot police to intervene.

Some of the policies that have forced students to strike include: A fixed deadline for exams and clearance of tuition by 16th November 2014, removal of special papers, increment of retake fees from 100,000 Uganda shillings to 200,000 among others.

By 11:50am (GMT) Police was still in running battles with rioting students in surrounding areas after forcing most of them out of campus.

Students smashed glass windows and doors and other university property. 10 students have so far been arrested by Police.
A team from Red Cross has camped at Nkumba university busy helping the injured and fainting students.

“If the deadline is implemented, a third of Nkumba University students are bound to miss exams”, a student whom Campus Times talked to sadly noted.

Examination for the semester ending in mid December 2014 are set to start at the end of November 2014.
