The situation at Nkumba University is getting to normal after a two days strike that resulted into destruction of property worth millions of shillings. There were running battles with police, tear gas allover and bullets being shot on Monday 17th and Tuesday 18th November 2014.
The peace talks resolved that;
Police in Entebbe on Monday 17th and Tuesday 18th November 2014 arrested over 10 students of Nkumba University over alleged involvement in a violent strike that led to destruction of property worth millions of shillings.
The university students woke up at 6am and started destroying the university library, lecture rooms and vans.
Students charged up and blocked all roads leading to the university while protesting against new policies imposed by the university administration.
The University through the office of the Academic Registrar headed by Obonyo Christine Kyayonka had increased retake fees from shillings 100,000 to 200,000/= and charges for a missed paper from shs20,000-100,000/=.
The academic registrar of Nkumba University, Obonyo Christine Kyayonka and former Kyambogo University academic registrar had also introduced a late registration fee of shillings 50,000/= to students who complete tuition fees payment late.
The students pointed fingers at their Guild President, Julius Byaruhanga over conniving with the university administration to impose the hiked fees.
Anti-riot swung into action after rowdy students damaged several university property including the guild canteen. Students also broke into restaurants and ate free food, looted several nearby shops and kiosks.
The police sealed off the university premises and arrested over 10 university students involved in the riot.
The police battled with rowdy students for the two days by using tear gas on addition to firing bullets.
The students are expected to begin their exams this Wednesday 20th November 2014.
