Geraldine Namirembe Bitamazire is the new Chancellor of Uganda Management Institute

Hon.Geraldine Namirembe Bitamazire has been installed as the chancellor of Uganda Management Institute (UMI).

Namirembe Bitamazire  was installed on Thursday 26th September 2013.

She now becomes the second titular head in the history of  Uganda Management Institute.

Hon. Namirembe-Bitamazire will serve in the position for four years. She replaces Mrs. Florence Mugasha, who was the pioneer Chancellor of UMI and served for two terms.

Bitamazire was the sector minister when the Universities and other Tertiary Institutions Act of 2001 and its subsequent amendments were enacted.

She issued the statutory Instrument that gave rise to the governance structures of Uganda Management Institute.

Education Minister, Hon. Jessica Alupo, who presided over the investiture, praised the new Chancellor for the outstanding tenure of duty and educational background and performance.

Hon Bitamazire has walked at all levels in the education sector as a teacher, headteacher, senior education officer, deputy chairperson Teaching service Commission and Education minister among other responsibilities.

During the installation ceremony, Hon. Jessica Alupo commended UMI’s Governing Council for ensuring that the Institute remains stable and progressive.  The reputation of UMI is well known locally, regionally and internationally.

She further observed that like all institutions, UMI has had its own challenges but the Governing Council has managed to steer the Institute through them.

The minister observed that UMI has overcome its challenges amicably without registering any strike from either students or staff. She urged other academic Institutions to could emulate the practice.

Ashe also announced that the Ministry of Education and Sports has earmarked UMI to benefit from the African Development Bank-funded Higher Education Science and Technology (HEST) Programme. UMI will receive funding towards the on-going construction of the classroom/office block, ICT equipment and staff development to a  shs 14bn.

In her acceptance remarks, Hon. Geraldine Namirembe-Bitamazire thanked President Yoweri Museveni for the appointment.

She pledged her commitment towards ensuring that UMI consolidates the established structures within the Institute and its Centres at Gulu, Mbarara and Mbale
