Prof. Fredrick I. B. Kayanja, founding Vice Chancellor, Mbarara University of Science and Technology.

Prof. Fredrick I. B. Kayanja is the founder and former Vice Chancellor, Mbarara University of Science and Technology. Apart from carrying out his administrative roles, he is also a Professor in the faculty of Medicine, making him the only teaching Vice Chancellor in Uganda.

He attended undergraduate courses in the Universities of London and Oxford, UK. He was a postdoctoral researcher at the Nuffied Orthopaedic Unit, University of Oxford, UK, and Harvard Medical School, USA.

Obtained the PhD through a sandwich programme from the University of East Africa and University of Cambridge, UK. Honoris causa doctorate, medalist of TWAS (The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World) Commendeur de 1’Ordre des Palmes Academiques of the Republic of France, Fellow of the African Academy of Sciences and the Uganda National Academy of Sciences.

He has undertaken sabbatical work in several universities in the United Kingdom and the United States of America. He is accepted by the international scientific community as an expert on reproduction in African mammals and on ovarian structure and function.

His contribution through research and publications has enabled him to make a meaningful contribution to conservation of the natural heritage of Uganda which is the basis for tourism, now accepted as a key contributor to the national economy.

He serves the African continent as the Editor-in- Chief of the African Journal of Ecology which is a highly regarded international journal and has kept the African flag flying high.

He has helped to enhance the acceptance of African authors as capable researchers and writers. Professor Kayanja is a renown academician who has written in the areas of anatomy and reproduction and has published over 100 scientific research papers in reputable national and international journals.

His major research interests include; the role of blood vessels in the osteogenic process, Mammalian reproductive biology, conservation and the environment, infectious diseases.
