Mbarara University of Science and Technology trains UPDF, Police and Prisons Service in ICT Skills

The Uganda Police Force and The Uganda Prisons Service officer on completion of their ICT skills training course at Mbarara university

The Uganda Police Force, UPDF and Uganda Prisons Service have completed an ICT Skills training course at Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST).

The 2 month course was offered by the MUST’s Institute of Computer Science and ended on Monday, 22nd September 2014.

The course covered ICT skills like

  • Introduction to computers
  • Iintroduction to the use of operating systems and computer hardware
  • Ddocument processing
  • Spreadsheets
  • Presentations
  • Computer security
  • The internet, email and social media among others.

Over 50 officers and men/women of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), Uganda Police Force and The Uganda Prisons Service were trained.

Presiding over the pass out ceremony, the Vice Chancellor of Mbarara University of Science and Technology, Prof. Frederick I.B Kayanja commended the Institute of Computer Science for positive community engagement and requested that the course be dynamic enough to accommodate the changing trends in technology.

Prof. Kayanja also urged the forces to adopt to the new technologies and incorporate them in their line of duty, stressing that military strategy, crime detection and prison service the world over had changed in their operations in the face of available technologies.

The Director of the Institute of Computer Science, Dr. Annabella Habinka, reiterated the institute’s commitment to continue the training program by announcing another intake of the combined forces to commence in October 2014.

Philimon Badagawa is a multimedia journalist with skills in news gathering, packaging, editing and online publishing. He has knowledge in data visualization, can design and manage websites. He previously worked as a journalist with Observer media and authored several articles and stories. He does research, video & audio recording, editing and production for online publication. He Participated in The New Dawn photography campaign aimed at rebranding Northern Uganda-USAID/NUTI Project (2010). Philimon is in love with photography, writing, reading, sharing new ideas and interacting with reasonable people for skills development.
