Mbarara University of Science and Technology Chancellor wins TWAS Regional Science Award

Prof. Peter Mugyenyi

The Chancellor of Mbarara University of Science and Technology, Prof. Peter Mugyenyi is the winner of the 2014 Regional Prize for Science Diplomacy for the Sub-saharan African Region.

Prof. Mugyenyi is acclaimed for his fight against the pharmaceutical industry to bring inexpensive antiretroviral drugs to Africa.

He was also a key consultant in the then United States President George W. Bush’s initiative “President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief” (PEPFAR), a program that has funded the life-saving anti-retroviral treatments for Africans suffering from HIV/AIDS.

This award carries a USD 3,000 cash award.
