Makerere University to Introduce a Masters Course on Land Management

Makerere University, through the College of Engineering, Design, Art, and Technology (CEDAT), is set to launch a new Masters programme.

The university will officially unveil the programme, Masters of Science in Land Management, on Wednesday 21st December, 2022 at the CEDAT Conference Hall.

CEDAT publicity team has confirmed to this publication that the Masters of Science in Land Management will be a two-year course that will kickoff in the Academic year 2023/2024.

The department justified the need for the course basing on the fact that Land is a basic factor of production in every country, and since all activities of man take place on it, there is need for efficient and sustainable utilization.

“One way of achieving efficient and sustainable utilization of land is by having professionals with multidisciplinary skills in handling and guiding different stakeholders on how to work with land. However, such professionals are lacking as the nature of training at higher institutions of learning can only permit having graduates in a particular core competence such as land surveying, physical planning, land law, land economics and land valuation,” part of the concept note read.

The note added that the gap in training and research has led to a limitation in human resource capacity in developing frameworks and policies to address various land issues such as securing land rights, access to land by women and other vulnerable groups and land registration.

The program therefore endeavors to produce a holistic land manager/ administrator to enhance the capabilities of the ordinary physical planner, land surveyor and registrar for example, to enhance giver egoists to improve land service delivery.

The course will focus on 5 knowledge areas including;

  • Land Tenure,
  • Land Value,
  • Land Use,
  • Land Development,
  • Research and Project Management

Applicants for the MSc Land Management should have;

  1. At A Minimum, A Lower Second-class Bachelor’s Degree or its Equivalent
  2. Those with a pass degree will be required to provide evidence of academic growth
  3. The relevant disciplines are Natural Resources Management, Land Surveying/Geomatics, Land Economics/Valuation Surveying, Law, Civil Engineering, Architecture, Geography, Physical Planning, Land Administration/Management, and Real Estate Management.
