Makerere university campus is going to experience a new nightlife after the installation of solar-powered streetlights. Over 120 solar-powered streetlights will be installed by the end of October 2014.
SHARP Electronics Technology Limited is implementing the project, worth billions of shillings.
On Friday 17th April 2014, Makerere University signed a Memorandum of Understanding with SHARP Electronics Technology Limited.
SHARP Electronics will also install 10 LED signage screens at strategic locations within Makerere University.
The solar powered streetlights shall carry advertising boxes and together with the LED signage screens.
This will help SHARP Electronics recover the money invested in the project through attracting advertisers.
Makerere University however reserves the right to vet all the advertisement content before placement.
According to the MoU signed, SMART Electronics will be granted a 10 year period to help the company recover the initial investment costs, after which ownership will be handed over to Makerere University at a free cost.
The Vice Chancellor, Makerere university, Prof. John Ddumba-Ssentamu thanked SMART Electronics for choosing to partner with them.
“We applaud SMART Electronics Technology Limited’s choice of Makerere University, as a partner in this venture. We thank you for your patience throughout the period of our deliberations and we look forward to embracing renewable energy to help us light up the Main Campus.” Ddumba said.
Commenting on the newly-signed deal, the University Secretary Mr. David Kahundha Muhwezi said “We welcome this partnership, especially as it also presents us with an opportunity to provide internship placements for our students.” In addition to SHARP Electronics’ team of experts, the company shall also employ Undergraduate students for internship on a Work Based Structure, according to the level at which the project has reached.”
The MoU signing was attended by Mr. Patrick Katto and Mrs. Rosette Katto, Managing Director and Director of SHARP Electronics respectively, The Director Estates and Works (EWD) Eng. Fred Nuwagaba, The Manager Procurement and Disposal Unit Mr. Levi Tushabe, The Senior Legal Officer Mr. Goddy Muhumuza and SHARP Electronics Staff.
