Maseruka Robert, a third-year student of journalism and communication, was officially sworn in as the 89th guild president of Makerere University.
This was during a modest ceremony on April 24th, together with a few cabinet members among whom was Dreamer Elizabeth (Deputy Prime Minister), Kiranda Sharifah (Finance minister), Nyagomma Emma had (Minister of gender), Adonai Rodney (Minister of Estates and Production) and Nambazira Patience as Academics Minister.
In his remarks, Maseruka vowed to address challenges faced by students such as delayed allowances for government-sponsored students and ‘inconsistencies’ in the current Makerere University students’ statute 2022 and guild constitution.
The outgoing guild president Alionzi Lawrence alias Dangote advised his successor to serve the interests of the students but not those around him or the political class.
“Be careful not to serve the interests of those around you or the political class. At the end of the day what truly matters is if that common student who probably has never seen you gets to pay surcharge or not, whether he has a proper meal before hitting the bed or not,” he advised.
Alionzi further urged Makerere students to work with the 89th government and lead by example to enable Uganda realize the Ugandan dream through what he termed the Makererean dream.
The swearing in ceremony was graced by Hon. Joel Ssenyonyi (MP Nakawa West) who urged University management to always make use of its alumni in Parliament to mobilise for resources.
Unlike the 88th guild government that served for barely four months, the 89th guild will serve for close to 9 months.
