Makerere University students who were suspended by the Vice Chancellor Prof. Bananas Nawangwe on 7th August for allegedly sharing fire setting messages on social media platforms via inflammable messages have reportedly went to court to seek freed.
Jobs Dhabona, Samuel Kigula, Daniel Kituno and Kassim Njalira filed a an application before the Kampala High Court against a decision made by the University Vice Chancellor who made it clear that they intend to disrupt University activities.
The four claim that the decision was made contrary to the rules of natural justice which violates their fundamental rights to education, equality and non-discrimination and loss of self -esteem as a result of this suspension.
The students learnt of their suspension when fellow students shared with them screen-shots of the University’s twitter handle @MakerereU.
According to these students, Prof Nawangwe wrote to them on 6th and 7th August 2018 specifying reasons for their suspension and said he took the decision to ensure the safety and security of other members of the university since the circulating messages were reportedly calling for defiance and disruption of peace.
They now want an order of compelling the university administrators including; vice chancellor, academic registrar and dean of students to unconditionally reinstate them to their respective programs of study and facilitate them in terms of administering them with special tests, examinations or academic privileges lost as a result of their indefinite suspension.
