Makerere university staff salary increment still in doubt

H.E Anna Adeke Ebaju, Guild president of Makerere University
Last week Makerere university lecturers informed the Council that they will not return to work until the 100 salary increment as promised is implemented.
I here by inform you of the outcome of Makerere university council meeting concerning the ongoing staff strike about 100% salary increment.

In the council meeting, the issue of salary increment was discussed and a committee was set up which is to lead talks between MUASA and the Ministry of Education.

The meeting with the Ministry is set for this Wednesday. In the council meeting, it was stated that no money exists to cater for the 100% salary increment  that was approved recently by Makerere university Council, the highest decision making body.

However, the Ministry of Education is willing to take up the whole wage bill so that Makerere university is left with 33bn; which would probably after agreement be allocated to the staff.

But again, the proposal to take the whole wage by the Ministry of Education must be agreed on by ministry of Finance and Public Service therefore it is only speculative that it will be taken up.

I request you to call all Makerere university students to report on 17th so that together we can create the urgency for a solution to be found so that we do not end up in a crush programme like we did a year ago.

Thank you, Adeke Anna Ebaju, Guild President Makerere university
