Makerere University staff has tasked the University Council to search for a new vice-chancellor, less than two months to the end of Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe’s term.
According to staff, Prof. Nawangwe’s term expires August 31, but no efforts are laid to get a capable substitute who will fill the vacuum.
For the council to appoint the Vice Chancellor, they have to first review that person’s work and capacity to run the institution.
Prof. Nawangwe, was the former deputy vice chancellor in charge of Finance and administration before he was appointment vice chancellor in June 2017 becoming the 11th VC of Makerere University since its establishment, replacing Prof. John Ddumba-Ssentamu.
According to Daily Monitor that held an interview with an inside source, the staff expressed possibility that Prof. Nawangwe is likely to be reappointed as council seems reluctant on the matter.
This was portrayed by the Chancellor during the 72nd graduation, who commended the current Mak vice chancellor for his good work towards transforming the university, and to many, it seemed an endorsement by the former to the latter to be reappointed as the VC.
As per by the law, article 31(4) of the universities and other Tertiary Institutions Act, which states that the vice chancellor shall be appointed on terms and conditions determined by the University Council for five years and shall be eligible for reapportionment for one more time.
This means that Prof. Nawangwe, if the council okays his stay in office, is still eligible for one more term as the Makerere University’s vice chancellor.
