Makerere University has launched a study to a certain the cause of poor performance in science subjects especially Biology in the recently released Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) exams.
The Study is being carried out in the office of the Vice Chancellor Academic Affairs. Prof Arthur Tugume the Dean of School of Bioscience noted that the study will be carried out in two phases.
First Phase will involve identifying the root causes of the problem. This will be through analyzing qualification competencies of teachers, availability of functioning laboratories in schools, technicians, how topics are being taught, learners attitudes towards the subject among others.
The team will then find possible solutions to end this worrying trend.
“We are hopeful that in the medium to long-term the problems of poor academic performance in Biology at UACE and the ills thereof will be history, just as we solved similar problems that were in Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics in the 1980s,” Prof Tugume said in a statement.
