Makerere Assistant Lecturers to Sue University Over 38.5b Debt

Makerere university assistant lecturers have filed a notice of intent to sue the university over their unpaid salaries.
Through their lawyers, Kesiime & Co.Advocates,  the lecturers demand that the university pays their dues worth to Shillings 38.5b.
Over 547 lecturers claim that they have not received any payments from the academic year 2015/16 to date as money was placed in a wrong salary scale.

The assistant lecturers led by Isaac Mugume, Janet Kasule, David Mpiima Mugambe, Robert Kakuru, Abubaker Sadik Mustafa and Priscilla Asiimire, claim that the named officials played a role in maintaining them on an illegal salary scale (M6.2), which amounts to change of terms of service/ contract, which affected their earnings.

“Before the 2015/2016 financial year, the above salary scales were not in existence. It is thus unfair of you to subject our clients to the injustice of using M6.1 and M6.2 salary scales to compute salaries and any other changes in M6 salary scale shouldn’t have affected the existing staff if the change was lawful,” the notice reads.

“Take further notice that should you fail to honor and respect our clients’ demands within the stipulated period of fifteen (15) days we shall have no option but to unleash legal machineries against you in courts of law to realize these remedies to your own peril, colossal cost and mortification,” reads the notice.
