Makerere student dies of suspected poisoning after kidnap

A Makerere University student who was reportedly kidnapped has died just weeks after being released by his captors.
Simon Ashaba Faith, 22, a third-year student of Social Sciences and resident of Nkrumah Hall was kidnapped by an unknown gang on November 28 from the Wandegeya campus.
The assailants then used his phone to call the deceased’s sister,  Ms Brendah Nayebare, also a student at the same University and asked for a ransom of Shs400,000 ransom.

“Someone called our sister using his number. We agreed to meet them in Wandegeya on November 29 but they did not show up. They instead called and told us that his iPhone would stand for him,” Ashaba’s elder brother, Mr Samson Drones Rugongeza, said.

However, the family was later called and told to find Ashaba in Luzira at Butabika hospital route.

He was found but unconscious.

“When we found him, we first took him to Butabika before transferring him to Kibuli hospital. At Kibuli, doctors scanned his brain to establish why he was not speaking but found nothing,” Mr Rugongeza recounted.

“In the third week, he got paralysed, he would not change or turn on the bed”

On establishing the cause of his death, the doctors at Kibuli hospital suspect that the deceased
was poisoned with a dangerous substance that systematically affected his body parts upto his death.

Ashaba was buried in Buyanja, Rukungiri District on December 27.

According to Mr Rugongeza, Ashaba’s killers must have been some of his close pals.

“If they were not friends how could they have called our sister who is at the university? They did not call mum or daddy but the person who was close by at Makerere,”
