LIVE COVERAGE: Celebrating 30 years of Journalism and Communication at Makerere University

Prof. Monica Chibita the Dean- Faculty of Journalism, Media and Communication at Uganda Christian University, Mukono, delivering a keynote address at the dinner

The department of Journalism and communication at Makerere university is celebrating 30 years. As  part of the activities, the department is holding  a fundraising dinner at Hotel Africana on Friday 27th September 2019 starting at 6:00pm.

According to information from the department, proceeds from the dinner will go towards refurbishing and equipping a Multimedia Production Resource Centre at a cost of four hundred thirteen million shillings (413M).

This Centre will house a Campus Television studio, radio production studios and a computer lab, to be used mainly in the training of students, and for improving the communication function within the University.

In addition, Prof. Monica Chibita the Dean- Faculty of Journalism, Media and Communication at Uganda Christian University, Mukono, will deliver a keynote address on ‘Access to information for good governance’ at this dinner.

For the last 30 years, the Department of Journalism and Communication at Makerere University has been involved in the training of a critical mass of journalism and communication professionals.

The department has expanded the academic programmes from bachelors to masters and doctoral degree awards.

They have also been involved in cutting-edge research and publishing in the fields of media, journalism and communication as well as community outreach. We are currently one of the recognised UNESCO Centres of Excellence in journalism training on the African continent.

Many of the department’s alumni continue to serve at national, regional and international levels and have greatly impacted the journalism, media and communication industry.

Philimon Badagawa

Philimon Badagawa is a multimedia journalist with skills in news gathering, packaging, editing and online publishing. He has knowledge in data visualization, can design and manage websites. He previously worked as a journalist with Observer media and authored several articles and stories. He does research, video & audio recording, editing and production for online publication. He Participated in The New Dawn photography campaign aimed at rebranding Northern Uganda-USAID/NUTI Project (2010). Philimon is in love with photography, writing, reading, sharing new ideas and interacting with reasonable people for skills development. He was recognized for excelling in Journalism during the Uganda Journalism Awards by ACME in 2015. (philebadagawa@gmail.com, +256 774 607 886)
