Lira University Ushers in New Students’ Guild Government

Lira University student leaders have been officially sworn-in to kickstart their duties.

The occasion was graced by the Vice Chancellor, Lira University, Prof. Jasper Ogwal Okeng who advised the newly elected Students Guild Government leaders to be exemplary and support the University management in developing the institution.

According to the university’s Senior Communications Officer, the VC as well praised the outgoing Guild leaders for portraying high level of maturity during their tenure of office.

During his speech, Prof. Ogwal Okeng noted that some students tend to side with students even when they get facts on controversial issues.

“When elected, you become part of the Management Team, meaning speak objectively for the welfare of the students during meetings. Avoid looking for cheap popularity from students at the expense of the University progress,” he said.

Lira University conducted online elections and the VC suggested to make it a habit since the mode reduces costs and reduces violence during campaigns and voting days.

At the same event, Prof Ogwal Okeng named the multi-billion infrastructure development projects being undertaken saying it is a sign that the young university is at a steady growth rate.

He expressed happiness regarding the construction of the recently commissioned UGX 7 Billion Education Block that was completed in 2 years.

“A river flows and never ends….that is the system of Lira University,” he bragged.

The Dean of Students, Ms Emma Aceng Okite advised Guild leaders to prefer team work as a better way to realise their dreams arguing that “team work will spur development of this young university.”

Okite encouraged the students to be security conscious and report suspected criminals to police and relevant authorities.

The new Guild President, Mr Ogwal David Dickson, revealed that his government  will prefer negotiations and dialogue in solving grievances.

“Consultations, not violence must be the only means to handle students’ issues,” he said.
