Kampala International University (KIU) is set to launch Uganda’s first private cancer institute to support the country’s healthcare sector. The announcement was made by Al-Hajj Dr. Hassan Basajjabalaba, Chairman of the KIU Board of Trustees, during the university’s 30th graduation ceremony held on November 23, 2024, at its Kansanga campus in Kampala.
Dr. Basajjabalaba revealed that the cancer institute will be launched in 2025 during KIU’s 25th-anniversary celebrations in Ishaka, Bushenyi District. He added that the university will also inaugurate a new library.
“This is an important step in addressing Uganda’s healthcare needs. The institute will provide much-needed support for cancer diagnosis and treatment,” Basajjabalaba said.
The graduation ceremony saw 2,276 students awarded degrees in various disciplines, with 1,048 of them completing STEM courses. Vice Chancellor Professor Muhammed Ngoma emphasized the university’s focus on science and innovation, noting that STEM graduates accounted for 47% of the total.
“We are graduating 1,016 male and 1,260 female students this year. This demonstrates our commitment to empowering both men and women in critical fields,” Prof. Ngoma said.
Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, Minister of Information and National Guidance, congratulated the graduates and reaffirmed the government’s support for private universities. “The future is in your hands. KIU has equipped you with knowledge and qualifications. It is now up to you to shape your future,” he said.
Former Makerere University Chancellor, Prof. George Mondo Kagonyera, urged the graduates to use their knowledge for societal benefit. “The most important tool in your life is knowledge. Use it to improve not just yourself but also your community,” he said.
