Job Title:Financial Controller

TechnoServe undertakes targeted, catalytic technical assistance and other programming to increase the competitiveness of entrepreneurs, businesses and industries that in-turn provide sustainable employment, inclusion of the poor and increased incomes. A substantial portion of our work is in agriculture, enhancing farm productivity and commodity quality and addressing gaps in processing and other agribusiness capacities.
Our programs increase smallholder access to new technologies, aggregation and storage mechanisms, markets, critical information and finance. TechnoServe also undertakes structured programs to identify and support high potential entrepreneurs in various sectors through leadership mentoring networks, formalization support, access to capital and development of sustainable business services such as accounting, finance, marketing and human resource management.
Job Summary: The primary responsibility of the Financial Controller is to carry out and manage accounting and finance activities, focusing on ensuring that internal and external reporting deadlines are being met and to ensure that TechnoServe and donor guidelines are being adhered to. In this vacancy, the Financial Controller will have a strong staff capacity orientation and also will involve identifying and facilitating with the improvement of internal systems and procedures within the finance department, have the ability to manage a diverse portfolio of challenging activities. The Financial controller will develop budgets for submission to donors through working with program managers to ensure that all proposed activities are well budgeted for.
Key Duties and Responsibilities: 
  • Significantly co-ordinate the compilation of all internal and external financial reports/proposals for all projects/program
  • Carry out performance evaluations of financial personnel
  • Assist in building the capacity of local staff through on the job training and also identifying further formal training needs and if applicable, facilitate with this training
  • Mentor and train field staff in principles of financial reporting and financial and administrative control for field site operations
  • Assist finance staff by helping them to develop a stronger understanding of TechnoServe Inc. systems and procedures
  • Produce relevant, useful and timely information to senior management with respect to the current financial position and financial consequences of any proposed decisions or activities
  • Offer technical guidance and direction with respect to financial options available in project planning and implementation.
  • Meet with TechnoServe management staff on a regular basis to keep them up to date on all program activities
  • Provide cover for finance staff as required
  • Ensure that the information in the Fixed Asset register accurately reflects the information per the financial system
  • Perform routine analysis of costs as required e.g. phone usage/fuel usage etc, and to advice on any variance requiring management attention.
  • Consult with TechnoServe legal counsel as required, especially where issues relating to labor law arise
  • Assist in the implementation of new financial policies in consultation with the country director
  • From time to time be called upon to support TechnoServe supported clients to recommend/help in developing proper financial systems
  • Be accountable for accuracy of data recorded into the system
  • Responsible for posting and reviewing transactions
  • Conducting and supervising monthly reconciliation
  • Building and reviewing GL account schedule
  • Manage cash flow and cash activity
  • Review and approve payroll
  • Perform any other duties as allocated by the Country Director
Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 
  • The best candidate must hold a Business degree plus accounting qualification e.g. CPA, ACCA
  • At least seven years’ experience in a similar position within a large private sector company, international organization or a consulting firm.
  • Technical competence with excellent planning, organisation and time management skills
  • Demonstrable business management and team working skills
  • Skills in financial management and financial reporting.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to TechnoServe corporate culture.
  • Possess good organizational and communication skills and the ability to assist in the design and execution of planned activities are essential.
  • Possess experience as a qualified accountant in an environment that shows initiative, problem solving and good decision making abilities.
