Job Title: Nutrition Emergency Response Officer

Job Summary: The Nutrition Emergency Response Officer will primarily offer overall programmatic management to all nutrition interventions planned and under implementation in the districts supported under Gulu zonal office with focus on districts currently affected by the South Sudan influx. The Nutrition Officer will work closely with District Health Officers DHO, UNHCR and nutrition partners in these areas. At least 60% of the time will be spent supporting the emergency districts while 40% of the time will support the regular nutrition programmes in the 4 sub regions of Bunyoro, West Nile, Lango and Acholi.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Work closely with the district authorities and partners in the refugee affected districts to map out hard to reach areas where mobile outreach services may be needed.
  • Guarantee the functionality of all outreach posts in the settlements and host communities (should be able to provide a comprehensive package of IMAM, EPI, ANC, Vitamin A, Deworming, Iron/folate supplementation).
  • Work with all relevant partners to ensure all children and pregnant mothers on arrival are screened for malnutrition at the reception centers.
  • Technically support the Gulu zonal office to work closely with district health authorities to build capacity of community based networks for early identification and referral of cases of SAM and ensures functionality of the VHT system.
  • Offer technical guidance and support to therapeutic feeding centers: ensure national IMAM guidelines are followed in the operations and training sessions conducted by all partners, support poor performing therapeutic feeding centers and ensure performance indicators meet the SPHERE minimum standards
  • Establish / strengthen and build links between therapeutic feeding programmes and supplementation feeding centers where they exist.
  • Proactively monitor program implementation of partners and districts including the efficient management of supplies and other resources supplied by UNICEF
  • Identify supply needs for UNICEF and liaise with CSD section in Kampala for timely release of supplies and support local capacity for supply forecasting and management
  • Provide technical support in the implementation of national IYCF guidelines. Ensure trainings are consistent with the national guidelines
  • Work with all district local governments to identify community based networks to support optimal infant and young child feeding and maternal practices.
  • Ensure jointly monthly support supervisions for nutrition and health are undertaken by the DHT and partners
  • Actively participate in all health and Nutrition coordination meetings organized by UNHCR
  • Collect programme monitoring data and produce quality reports on programme implementation
  • Input and significantly contribute to Donor proposal writing and reports as and when required
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
  • The ideal UNICEF candidate must hold a good University degree public health, nutrition or any other related technical field
  • A minimum of five years’ professional work experience in nutrition project administration, monitoring and evaluation, preferably with experience in the nutrition sector.
  • Fluency in English required. Knowledge of local working language of the duty station required. Knowledge of another UN working language an asset
  • Excellent analytical and conceptual thinking skills.
  • Good communication and Networking skills
  • Self-awareness and self-regulation and team work.
  • Computer literacy skills, including internet navigation and use of various office applications.
  • Proven ability to work in a multicultural environment and establish harmonious and effective working relationships, both within and outside the organization.
