War Child Canada works in Uganda with war-affected communities to help children reclaim their childhood through access to education, opportunity and justice. War Child Canada takes an active role in raising public awareness around the impact of war on communities and the shared responsibility to act. When war itself ends, the consequences endure. A lack of employment opportunities, the absence of effective economic or social structures, an under-educated population and a culture of impunity around rights violations combine to create conditions that make a return to conflict all too possible. But by making a long-term investment to create an environment in which childhood can thrive, the cycle of violence can be broken. War Child Canada is a registered Canadian charity based in Toronto and currently works in Afghanistan, Sudan, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Sierra Leone and Uganda.

About Programs:

War Child Canada has been implementing Access to Justice and Protection Programs for Women and Child Survivors throughout Northern Uganda for the past nine years. This program is extending to the refugee settlements in the West Nile region and Western Uganda. WCC seeks to increase the legal protections of children, youth, women and men and address the prevalence of perpetrators’ impunity through legal intervention, awareness raising and capacity building. Our new programs will expand to include Education and Peace building/Youth Engagement interventions.

Job Summary: The Protection Officer will be responsible for delivering a peace building and youth engagement program for South Sudanese and host communities in Uganda.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

• Supporting the creation and maintenance of community based youth groups and protection groups
• Deliver youth engagement activities that build life skills and protection mechanisms
• Support in the organizing and facilitating training of trainers (ToT) activities
• Create community awareness on protection, youth engagement and peace building
• Collect and enter data relevant to monitoring and evaluating the project and with the assistance of the Monitoring and Evaluation Officer analyze and prepare reports on results.
• Perform any other activities assigned by WCC.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

• The applicants should preferably hold university degrees preferably in law, community development, education, psychology, health sciences, political science or a related field
• A minimum of a year’s professional experience working with the community, preferably with youth
• At least 1 year professional experience working as a teacher or trainer
• Fluency in local languages and an excellent working knowledge of spoken and written English
• Working knowledge of excel, word and email applications
• This position is field based and requires an enthusiastic community based person who is committed to child protection and youth development.
• Excellent understanding of issues important to youth affected by war
• Excellent communication and negotiation skills
