Job Summary: The Research Specialist will provide technical support in the design and implementation of project quantitative and qualitative research activities. S/he will provide guidance to consortium partners’ data collection and analysis activities and will support the interpretation and communication of project data for internal learning.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Significantly contribute to the preparation of study protocols, research tools, guides, and manuals, for quantitative and qualitative research activities;
  • Carry out qualitative data collection, coding, analysis and reporting;
  • Conduct field tests and pilots for various quantitative (e.g. survey questionnaires) and qualitative (e.g. structured interview tools) and guidelines;
  • Develop codebooks for data entry of primary data collected from the field;
  • Offer technical support to consortium partners with statistical data analysis;
  • Support the communication of Activity findings for stakeholder and/or consortium partner to promote organizational/Activity learning;
  • Support various duties as assigned which may include Activity performance evaluation and other operations research and development tasks;
  • Undertake literature reviews and summarize them in a format that is relevant to the Activity and can be readily shared with its consortium partners and stakeholders, as needed; and
  • Perform any other tasks as assigned by the Senior M&E and Research Advisor.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The Research Specialist should hold a Master’s degree in Public Health, or related field, with a strong focus on applied research
  • At least three years’ experience in research and evaluation, or a Ph.D. in the above mentioned discipline plus 1-2 years of experience would be desirable;
  • Demonstrated experience in the design, implementation, analysis and reporting of quantitative and qualitative research activities using methods such as health facility exit interviews, focus group discussions, in-depth interviews;
  • Prior exposure and experience handling large scale and/or small scale surveys in public health, and large scale secondary data sources like the Health Management Information System (HMIS) and Demographic and Health Surveys;
  • Previous experience with data analysis software (e.g. STATA, SPSS, Nvivo and Atlas TI, etc.);
  • Ability to assess the quality of data and statistical information collected in an M&E system, i.e., have an understanding of reliability and validity;
  • Ability to produce thorough, high quality work within a tight timeframe;
  • Flexibility and ability to handle multiple tasks and work collaboratively within a matrix-oriented environment;
  • Publications in peer reviewed journal preferred;
  • Excellent skills in oral and written communications in English; and;
  • Broad working knowledge of HIV/AIDS prevention, care and treatment preferred.

About USAID Project:

The Global Health Division will be implementing the USAID/Uganda HIV/Health Initiatives in Workplace Activity, a five-year Cooperative Agreement – led by World Vision with RTI as a consortium partner – that will support delivery of comprehensive HIV/AIDS and health services at the workplace. This activity’s target population is the Uganda Police Force, private guards from security companies with a national coverage, Uganda Wild Life Authority Staff including game rangers and park wardens, other national park staff, staff in selected hotels under Uganda Hotel Owners Association, their families and surrounding communities. The project will also target selected hotels in high prevalence regions of the country under the guidance of Uganda Hotel Owners Association. The activity is purposed to reduce the incidence of HIV and other communicable diseases and improve the quality of care of those infected/affected through increased access to and use of comprehensive HIV/AIDS and other health services.
