Job – Chief Executive Officer at Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited

Job Title: Chief Executive Officer

Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL) is a Public Limited Liability Company incorporated in March 2001 under the Companies Act, 2012 (which repealed Companies Act, Cap. 110) on the basis of the Public Enterprises Reform and Divestiture Act, Cap 98 and Electricity Act, Cap 145 respectively vide Registration Number P.428. UEGCL is wholly owned by the Government of the Republic of Uganda.

Our key role is to – carry on the business of Electric Power generation and sale within Uganda or for export to neighbouring countries; build, operate and maintain Electricity Generation Plants; monitor the operation and maintenance of its Concessioned Assets – Nalubaale and Kiira Power

Stations; provide Project Implementation services to the Ministry of Energy & Mineral Development for and on behalf of the Government of the Republic of Uganda during the development of Publicly owned Electricity Generation Power Plants; provide Technical Support as and when required by the Government of the Republic of Uganda through the Ministry of

Energy and Mineral Development; organize, support, encourage and maintain training facilities in technical and related fields, amongst others.

Job Summary: The Chief Executive Officer will provide overall day-to-day strategic guidance, direction and leadership to the Senior Management with a view of steering the Company towards the realization of its Vision and Mission, and oversee the Company’s operations; to implement Board’s approved Policies, Decisions, Plans and Budgets; provide advice to the Board on matters relating to the Company’s business and operations; responsibility for submission of all reports required by the Board and the Company’s regulators; representing the Company in all Fora related to the Company’s operational and business requirements. The jobholder will be the Head of Management. The role holder will also be expected to attend and facilitate meetings with the Board, its Committees and the Company’s Shareholders.

  • Strategic Plan and Business Plan Proposals – at the end of each Strategic Planning Cycle
  • Company Work Plans and Budget Proposals – at the end of each operating cycles
  • Company’s Quarterly Performance Reports (Financial, Projects, Internal Audit) – at end of each operating quarter
  • Company’s Bi-Annual Management Reports – within a month of the end of six months period of the calendar year
  • Company’s Annual Report – within one month of the end of each year
  • Annual Inspection Report – within two months of end of each year
  • Company’s Bi-Annual Compliance Reports – within one month of end of each six months period
  • Bi-Annual Power Generation Market Intelligence Reports – within one month of end of each six months period
  • Company’s unaudited Financial Statements – by end of July of any year and by end of January
  • Periodic Briefs to the Board – at every end of quarter meeting of the Board and where circumstances deem it necessary
  • Proposals on the Concept Paper, Design, Development Plan, Human resourcing requirements, Curriculum , tuition, Strategic Plan for the Company’s Power Generation Training Institute akin to the likes of Makerere University and Kyambogo University
  • Responsible for the timely Project Implementation to meet expected National Generation Planning targets
  • Power Projects delivered on time to meet expected National Generation Planning targets

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The applicant should preferably hold an Honours’ Degree and Masters Qualification in Engineering, Business Administration, Project Management, Law, or Economics
  • A Post Graduate qualification in a Business related field will be an added advantage
  • Membership of relevant Professional Body
  • Valid practicing certificate, where applicable
  • Demonstrated experience in turning around business
  • Demonstrated experience in steering timely Project delivery/Commercial launch of Services/Products
  • Possess at least ten (10) years hands on experience in providing strategic support to Senior Management or strategic leadership
  • Sound knowledge of the Energy Sector or Utility Management, will be an added advantage
  • Sound knowledge of running a Business Enterprise, will be an added advantage
  • Past exposure and experience in using Management Information Systems and MS Office applications
