About US:

Chemonics seeks to fill the positions below for the USAID/Uganda Strategic Investment Activity. The purpose of the Uganda Strategic Investment Activity (SIA) is to facilitate foreign and domestic commercial investments that yield and advance development objectives. The 5-year (September 2021 – August 2026) activity, funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), will mobilize financing for investment in agriculture and food security, the productive use of energy for agriculture and related industries, and health. By supporting development-oriented investments, the Activity will integrate underrepresented populations into the market economy and facilitate the transition from subsistence to commercial production. Through transaction learning under its Investment Facilitation Platform, SIA will increase commercial financing and productive use of energy in agriculture and related sectors. Applying transaction learning at the policy level, SIA will promote improvements in laws, regulations, and formal and informal rules to enhance market system function.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage sourcing activities for multiple investment funds including professional networking and strategy evaluation
  • Manage multi-million-dollar investment funds; establish performance goals, allocate resources, and assess policies in order to make recommendations to senior management and Board of Trustees
  • Assist in the development and implementation of strategies for long-range financial stability and improved efficiencies for different Investees
  • Managing investees through trust-based relationships and analytical tools that allow for the close monitoring of risks, financial returns, and growth projections for different investees
  • Represent the Activity at investment and entrepreneur community events throughout Uganda including conferences and proactive engagement with other ecosystem players
  • Manage tasks related to deliverable reporting, monitoring investments, and match making of potential investors with our investee pipeline
  • As a member of the evaluation committee – review and evaluate proposals from contracted transaction advisors
  • As head of the investment analyst team; – review analysis reports, oversee contracted transaction advisors
  • Work alongside the MEL team in reviewing the deliverables from the transaction Advisors and consultants in the pre and post investment phases
  • Conduct due diligence on potential investees, including country, market, sector, competitor, impact, and growth analysis, complemented with financial analysis and full risk assessment
  • Take lead on investment structuring and negotiations with potential investees, resulting in the finalization of all relevant execution documents (loan agreements, shareholder agreements, impact-linked financing agreements, etc.) • Manage Investor relations. Build strong relationships with existing and potential investors
  • Take lead in presenting investment opportunities in Investment Committee meetings
  • Initiate and facilitate calls and meetings with current and prospective partners and investment managers
  • Document and file communication with investors, and prepare monthly and quarterly investor reports.
  • Build the analytical capacity of the inhouse associate team

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • The applicant must hold a Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Finance or related discipline; MBA or similar master’s degree preferred
  • CFA certification desirable
  • A minimum of six years of experience in management, experience in deal origination, deal due diligence, deal negotiation, and deal structuring.
  • Diverse experience in deal sourcing, analysis, due diligence, investment readiness support, impact measurement, and portfolio management across different sectors.
  • Experience managing multi-million-dollar investment funds, fund structuring, and disbursement.
  • Understanding of different financing Tools; – debt financing, mezzanine, equity, grants etc
  • Can build financial models and conduct detailed financial analysis generating actionable insights with a sound understanding of corporate finance.
  • High-level experience in Business development support, investment readiness support, and technical assistance towards entrepreneurs to provide sustainable solutions for their businesses.
  • Strong stakeholder relationship that broadens the capital map
  • Self-starter and all-rounder: willingness to take bold steps and to bring the organization with you, resulting in new investment opportunities, sustainable performance of the portfolio, and highly motivated colleagues and portfolio entrepreneurs.
  • Team player with strong project management and investment skills: You can take ownership of key workstreams, leads investment processes while empowering other team members.
  • Entrepreneurial experience and mindset: You have been a part of, or have worked with entrepreneurs and understand their needs
