Job Tittle: Volunteer Education Officer at Africa Development Corps (ADC)

Africa Development Corps (ADC), formerly known as Visions in Action, is an international NGO based out of Washington DC, working in relief and development throughout Africa. Over the past 23 years we have been involved in the implementation of a wide range of humanitarian activities in countries such as Uganda, Tanzania, South Africa and Liberia. In particular, ADC has implemented development and relief programs in the areas of HIV/AIDS, education, youth development and food security. Our current programming in Uganda focuses upon book distribution, library construction and teacher training in rural areas. The program aims to facilitate pupil’s transition from learning in local languages to learning in English. We do this, firstly and foremost, by providing new English textbooks received from donors to schools throughout Uganda. Also, we aim to foster a culture of reading in individual villages and communities, as well as train teachers on how to establish and run school libraries.
Job Summary: The Volunteer Program Officer (VPO) will be based at ADC’s head office in Kampala, with frequent travel to the field. Their main responsibilities will be to organize book sorting and distribution to various field sites across Uganda, as well as conducting continuous monitoring and evaluation throughout the program’s implementation. This role involves management responsibilities as the candidate will directly supervise a team of in-field book processors. The candidate must work closely with all program staff, and provide the Executive Director and Education Program Manager with monthly progress reports.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
  • The applicant should possess a University Degree or equivalent experience required, Masters Degree in development related area is preferred.
  • Ideally, the candidate will have background in education.
  • Some knowledge and experience in the field of logistics would be an added advantage.
  • Experience in nonprofit setting and/or international NGO setting required.
  • Prior experience conducting monitoring and evaluation is required.
  • Excellent communication skills and be willing to travel to challenging rural environments.
  • Experience in a management capacity will also be seen as an added advantage.
Job Terms: This Position is an International Supported Volunteer position (SV). SV will receive US$350 monthly living stipend, basic medical insurance and accommodation in the VIA Guesthouse in Kampala. Supported Volunteers are responsible for their airfare to and from Uganda.
