I have never understood the criteria UNCHE uses to licence these mushrooming brief-case universities that spring up every other day in Uganda.
By brief case university,I mean those institutions that have one long building that serves as main administration block, main hall, halls of residence, lecture rooms, library and laboratory at the same time situated on a 2 acre piece of land.
They are far from meeting the guidelines of the institutions of higher learning. They share neighbourhoods with casinos, night clubs, garages, beaches, shopping malls and betting centres.
Some are put in residential houses, highways and even in central business district. Is this the condusive environment NCHE recommends?Has education become acommercial venture?Isn’t current university education becoming ascam?
