Grant MUBS autonomy – Prof Kagonyera

Prof Mondo Kagonyera, Makerere University Chancellor

Prof Mondo Kagonyera, Makerere University Chancellor has asked government to grant Makerere University Business School (MUBS) an independent status, saying the institution has “matured” and can move on independently.

Kagonyera was speaking at the MUBS’ graduation ceremony on Friday 30th May, where a total of 1,200 students were awarded diplomas and certificates in different courses.

Prof Kagonyera said the longer it takes to grant MUBS its independence denies the institution its rightful place among similar institutions.

“To say MUBS is a tertiary institution, similar to these colleges on the streets in Kampala is to belittle the effort of the great minds that have made this institution what it is,” Prof Kagonyera noted.

“It is time that government took a bold decision to make this institution an independent university,” he added.

He said if the government cannot automatically make MUBS a university, then it should amend the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act 2001 to allow it be accommodated as an independent degree awarding institution.

Prof Venansius Baryamureeba, the chairperson Makerere university Business School Council said the school has  attained reasonable growth. There are enough staff, infrastructure, student numbers and academics which critics were using to stifle its plan for autonomy.

The Cabinet endorsed a proposal to make Makerere university Business School independent from Makerere University and adopted the name Metropolitan Universal Business School in In 2012.
