Kampala International University has awarded the former President of Tanzania, Ali Hassan Mwinyi an Honorary Doctorate of Science (Honoris Causa). The celebrated teacher, Ali Hassan Mwinyi received the doctorate at the 11th Graduation ceremony of Kampala International University held on Friday 14th November 2014 at the main campus in Kansaga.

A total of 2985 students were conferred certificates, Diplomas and Degrees in different courses.

Hassan Mwinyi’s acceptance speech: 

He thanks the Almighty God for the gift of long life and good health. “I’m nearing 90 years now (2014)……….but I can read this document without glasses”, Mwinyi joyfully says.

“I also thank my parents for the good upbringing that can be evidenced through the career journey I have walked. I believe that service to these people is service to God himself”.

“This humble upbringing saw me become a teacher, a profession that made me understand people better throughout  my years of teaching……”.

“I believe that teachers should never expect to be served, their only motivation comes when students succeed in life….”

Ali Hassan Mwinyi notes that decision making is good to those who benefit out of it, but on the other hand; the decision is bad to those it affects …., he thus encouraged those in leadership to make decisions rationally.

“A person’s humble setting and upbringing should not limit one’s ambitions because it’s not about wealthy but morals”.

He encourages graduates not to rush for quick gains at the disadvantage of others.

Profile of Ali Hassan Mwinyi, Former President of Tanzania

Ali Hassan Mwinyi was born on May 8, 1925, in Kivure, Tanganyika and raised in Zanzibar (which joined with Tanganyika in 1964 to form present day Tanzania). He is a trained to be a teacher and a Muslim by religion

Political career
In 1970, Mwinyi was appointed Minister of State in the President’s Office Between 1970 and 1972, he was appointed Minister for Health in the Union Government. From 1972 to 1975, he was Minister for Home Affairs in.

In 1975 he was appointed Ambassador to Egypt where he served for two years. From 177 to 1981, Mr. Mwinyi was Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism in the Union Government From 1982 to 1983, He was Minister of State in the Vice- President’s Office.

In 1983, he was Interim President of Zanzibar and Interim Chairman of the Revolutionary Council. In 1984, He was elected President of Zanzibar, Chairman of the Zanzibar Revolutionary Council and appointed Vice-President of the Union Government.

Mwinyi was elected President of the United Republic of Tanzania in 1985 and was reelected in 1990.
