Job Title:     Finance and Administration Officer

About US:

The AfriChild Centre (AfriChild) is a multidisciplinary research Centre that works to improve child-focused policy and practice through scientific research, analysis and knowledge development in collaboration with the public and private sectors, academia and civil society.

Job Summary:  The Finance and Administration Officer will provide financial management, direction and guidance; and ensure AfriChild’s overall strategic objectives are met within the framework of its Financial Management policies and procedures, best practices and relevant laws. S/he will work under the supervision of the AfriChild Executive Director.

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Co-ordinate the budgeting and forecasting planning exercise to ensure that these are consistent with best practices and in accordance with specific needs of development partners and AfriChild.
  • Develop and submit financial reports to the Executive Director, Management and donors as specified in the AfriChild Financial Policies.
  • Develop, review, evaluate, and implement internal control systems to maintain financial integrity and comply with established AfriChild Financial policies.
  • Develop the capability of non-finance staff in financial management.
  • Provide support and guide grants and contracts management to ensure adherence and compliance with AfriChild policies & donor requirements.
  • Supervise and manage finance and administration staff and functions in line with the HR Manual and Finance Policy.
  • Liaise with internal and external auditors and follow-up on implementation of audit recommendations.
  • Plan and coordinate the administrative function of the organization.
  • Develop and submit for approval: Expenditure documents/reports for goods, services and staff salaries.
  • Ensure appropriate use of assets, facilities and materials for the organisation.
  • Participate in Management meetings and make presentations to the Board (on request), advice on optimal resource utilization and follow up /report on agreed action points.
  • Maintain the integrity of AfriChild’s Financial Information Management Systems and ensure regular backups of financial information to minimize risk / impact or loss of data.
  • Identify finance-related knowledge needs for AfriChild and its stakeholders.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience: 

  • The ideal candidate must hold an Honours Bachelor’s Degree in either Commerce (Accounting) or Business Administration (Accounting) or Business Studies (Accounting) or Finance and Accounting with full Professional Accounting Qualifications such as ACCA, CPA, ACIS, CIMA
  • At least five years of working experience in accounting and finance preferably in an INGO or NGO
  • Donor financial accounting procedures
  • GAAP, IAS/IFRS accounting requirements and budgeting
  • Word, Excel, financial information systems, vision excel and executive, as well as database and accounting packages.
  • Tax laws and systems in Uganda
  • Grants Management, donor relationship management and donor reporting
  • Budgeting and budgetary control
  • Analytical skills

  • Interpersonal skills
