Mexico stunned the defending champions Germany In their opening game with a narrow 1-0 win
Germany suffered the same fate that France did in 2002 and Spain in 2014 defending champions losing their first game. The Germans were disappointing in defence and lacked imagination going forward and Mexico who were lightning quick on counters took the advantage.
On one such counter, Lozano scored to give Mexico a surprise lead. Even as Germany piled on shots (25) in the end they failed to beat Ochoa in the goal. With the win, Mexico beat Germany for the first time since 1985.
Germany’s decision to not include PFA young player of the year Leroy Sane might comeback to haunt they team as they clearly lacked pace and width where Leroy Sane could have been instrumental. Overall Germany had more of the ball but they lacked their so called Germany efficiency and some players looked tired to say the least.
Germany were most people’s favourite to go all the way and defend their title however they were dealt a blow as Mexico pulled off a historic result against the World champions in their opening group game.
